Aber der Eindruck, der im Rückblick über dem Jahr hängt – mehr besorgt als veränderungsoffen, eher beklommen als selbstbewusst – hat er nicht auch mit uns selbst zu tun?
Politischer Boden muss gleichsam wieder aufgeforstet werden mit Strukturen, die Loyalität und Legitimität sichern, mit Institutionen, die sich in praktischer Arbeit bewähren, mit Parteien, die das politische Personal wie die dazu gehörigen Ideen hervorbringen. Dergleichen kann sich nur in einem schwierigen und schmerzlichen Lernprozess vollziehen.
Im Grunde steht auf der Haben-Seite dieses Jahres vor allem eine Erfahrung.
Es ist die Erfahrung, wie unwirklich, ja gespensterhaft entfernt bereits alles zurückliegt, was doch bis eben noch Wirklichkeit war, unentrinnbar und wie es schien, fast für die Ewigkeit bestimmt...
Das ist nicht viel, wenn man mit Kästner fragt, wo das Positive bleibe.
Aber es gibt immerhin Anlass zu der Hoffnung, dass wir vielleicht doch schon weiter sind, als wir glauben.

But this impression from looking back at the year – more worrisome than open to change, more apprehensive than self-confident – does it not have something to do with us?
Political ground must be built with structures that assure loyalty and legitimacy, with institutions that prove themselves in their work, with parties that can provide the required personnel and appropriate ideas.
This can only happen in a difficult and painful learning process. Basically, the bright side of this year consists of one experience. It is the experience of how what was reality a moment ago and thought to last an eternity quickly vanishes in the past and thus becomes unreal...
This is not much if you ask, as Kästner does, where optimism is.
But there is always a reason to hope that we are further than we think.
